Winter market, NYC – Jan 2009 – 19

These photos were taken on a random Saturday afternoon in late January 2009, about two blocks south of the movie theater where I was planning to see the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
I arrived half an hour early (as usual), and decided to wander around the area to see if I could find something interesting to photograph — and stumbled unexpectedly upon a "green market" in the "pocket park" next to the subway station at Broadway & 66th Street. Aside from the essentially empty "DiPaola Turkey Farm" booth, the other vendors seemed to be selling apples (and hot cider) for the most part, though there were also a couple of stands selling honey, cookies, and pies.
Lots of people were walking by, and there were some chairs and small picnic tables where people could sit and relax, or perhaps enjoy some of the wares they had purchased. It was pretty cold when I took these pictures, probably around 25-30 degrees Fahrenheit, but there was also a dazzling bright sun that made the weather a little more tolerable….
After I finished taking as many pictures as I could reasonably imagine taking (80% of which were deleted before these "keepers" were uploaded), I walked back north to the movie theater. Along the way, I passed a guy wearing a billboard advertising a "going out of business" sale at Circuit City … which had nothing to do with the fresh-food market I had just seen, but which was still sufficiently interesting that I couldn’t help photographing them and adding them into the collection…

New York Public Library #5

April 13th, 2006 – New York, United States
When I visited New York in April 2006 – I like to try to get there at least once a year if I can, so invigorating and exciting do I find it – I had hardly taken a photograph in six months. I wandered the streets looking for the iconic (or, failing that, the stereotypical) Big Apple shots, and though I half-heartedly took one or two snaps of a young man leaning against a wall on 5th Avenue playing the saxophone, with the Empire State Building looming in the background, I found I hadn’t quite got my street photography mojo back. It had taken me a long time to get up the courage to take candid shots in public back in Geneva less than a year earlier, and not having done so for so long, I reverted to my natural discretion and self-consciousness.
Eventually I decided to give up and went into the New York public library behind Bryant Park, where, ironically, an exhibition of street photography was being shown. Once I had been round the exhibition I explored more of the magnificent building with its astonishing grandeur and gorgeous artworks. Finally, exhausted – I had walked over 120 blocks in the day – I sat down on the bench opposite the one in this picture with the intention merely of resting, only to have my photographer’s instinct ignited by the arrival of a young Japanese couple.
This and the next photo of the couple in black and white may not strictly speaking be considered street photographs, but to me they represent the best I have so far achieved in the genre.
Click here to view large on black – I’m not sure it’s better, but I’ll leave you to decide.

Deer

I visited my favorite pond today, but the insects, frogs, and birds are gone. As I was driving away and wishing for some wildlife, three deer came bounding over the hill. I followed them for about 15 minutes, trying to get clear shots. They stayed on the move and also kept a wary eye on me, especially the largest one at the top. (The smallest one stuck pretty close to the middle one, and I think they must be mother and daughter.)
Everyone says these are female blacktail deer. (But why aren’t their tails black?)
Explore #205 for 10/25/07. Thanks, everyone!

great work. I like that you can’t see her face. it mimics the portrait in the background.
I found you via your comment on flickr.com/photos/silvertony/1259850048/ and came to have a look at YOUR stream. Your work is also excellent and very witty. I am inspired!

This is such a beautifully composed photo. I love all the movement and stillness, and I also enjoyed reading the backstory.
Many thanks to everyone for your comments and for faving this picture. It’s a favourite of mine, but I was never sure of its wider appeal – now I guess I know !
(Plus I’m secretly relieved that my most interesting photograph may soon no longer be a picture of a building – a very colourful building, admittedly – but still a building).
This is simply fantastic….period.
Cool!!

Then I understood everything.
Excellent not only because excellent composition & colors.
Keep in touch,

Thank you to all those who have commented or faved this photograph over the last few weeks.
Thanks, Vasili, for taking the time to view the original size. I think this is one of the very few amongst my photos that is actually worth looking at in that sort of detail. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Superb.

Fantastic Shot!
Great moment!

I love your photos and the way you comment them!
I’d say it was street. And I love that the composition could almost be an artwork itself. For me, the painting is nice, but made so much nicer by the girl on the bench.
Absolute gem of a shot.

Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Books & Portraits, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
Thanks for the invitation lemon hound, I’ve taken you up on it.
Marec01, apologies for the late reply. Astonishingly, this is the only full size picture I’ve been able to find of this (you may need to click on Continue to Gallery if the image doesn’t appear immediately). It turns out that the upper part depicts Moses bringing down the tablets from the mountain. I’ve searched but not been able to find much more information about it – maybe you’ll have more luck than I did !
"an untrained eye", oooh !… It’s fantastic, you found the missing part ! frankly you are very gifted because we were several people in France looking for this painting, thanks a lot

If one were to look at this wonderful photo in a humorous way, Lot would be saying to his daughters, as he gazes down on the girl sitting on the bench:
"Hold on daughters, what’s that woman on the bench doing with her skirt? Wow! Nice knees!", to which his daughters reply, "Oh Daddy, you’re such a lech!"
……and I say, it IS a really great photo moment! You do indeed have a very good eye, untrained or not.

It actually did kind of look like a painting from the thumbnail. What a great capture!
Perfect timing!
WOO HOO!!!!!! Congratulations on this FANTASTIC shot. I could be wrong, but i don’t think we have mule deer here. These females look like black-tailed deer to me…….and very healthy ones at that. I’m surprised they were so close to civilization. I rarely see them when hiking with jasmine now, and if i do, they run away because the hunters have really spooked them. This is just a GREAT shot …..you got a 3-fer…..that is tremendous. So sharp and gorgeous setting with them in a pyramid/triangle pose!!!!!!!!!
A definite FAVE for me. BTW: I went to Vancouver Lake this afternoon not expecting to see any thing, and lo and behold i found another frog, some insects and a butterfly!!!!
You are invited to add this image to Voices in the Wilderness
Fabulous capture, Noel. This looks a bit like a painting but certainly not fake. Interesting that someone would make that accusation, not knowing you or bothering to ask if you manipulated the photo at all. It’s certainly better than anything I saw on his site so maybe there’s some envy there.

These are likely Columbian blacktail deer, Odocoileus hemionus columbianus. Blacktail deer are a subspecies of mule deer, the main physical difference being the tail coloration and their smaller size. Mule deer are larger with white tails and black tips.
Wow, thanks everyone for such lovely comments, faves, and invitations! I truly appreciate your support! I’ll go with the concensus that they are blacktail deer.

Hi, I’m an admin for a group called WILD ANIMALS Make Me HAPPY!, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
Nice catch Noel, doesn’t look fake at all. Looks like your camera simply metered off the foreground giving a bit of overexposure in the background. Looking at your EXIF data looks like this in fact may be straight out of the camera ? …good job. The triangle formed by deer makes for a great composition.
@nature nook – You make an interesting point about the background. Actually, it isn’t overexposed, it’s misty! There’s a large human-made pond between the deer on the hillside and the trees in the background. It’s owned by a paper company — heaven only knows what they use it for, but it often steams. Hence the misty the background. (Sometimes it foams and smells like rotten eggs.) I’m hoping the deer didn’t spend too much time munching on that grass.
Beautiful Noel……great capture…..I love the mist in the background!

these are not blacktail deer these are whitetail deer and this is very fake i go hunting and dont even haft to realize that your background couldnt be real. But anyways how did you do this?
@seezach: I don’t know one kind of deer from the other, so I accepted other people’s opinion that these were blacktails. The photo really isn’t fake. You’re the second person to say that, though. I wonder why some people see it as fake.
wow this is great people tell me that my photos are fake dont worry about yours mine arent and your arent so come check mine out great pic o and these are whitetails.
